Full Screen vs Widescreen Part 1

The first thing we are going to look at is Full Screen vs Widescreen. Now you might be asking, what is the difference between Full Screen and Widescreen. The screen ratio of Full Screen is 4:3 or 1:33:1. And it is what you would see on your old tube TVs and where the picture would fill up the whole screen. That way those 'pesky' little black bars weren't there. However, those bars are a good thing as it how the picture was meant to be seen.

Widescreen has a lot of different ratios, but we are looking at just one today: 1:85:1. If you have an HDTV (16x9) it will fill up 98% of the screen and just leave little black bars on the top and bottom. Don't panic, this is normal and is how the director wanted you to see it.

I used the movie Thirteen for reference pictures.

The sides are cut off in Widescreen. This is not a good thing as we want to see what the director intended us to see. I also included 'Stretch-O' to show what happens when you have a Full Screen image and decide to stretch.

In part 2, I'll be showing the difference between 1:33:1 and 1:78:1. Until then...
